PETE WATERMAN RULES BRITANNIA Monday, 19 October. 2009 Regional Minister, Phil Woolas and Crewe and Nantwich MP, Edward Timpson, visited the Exhibition Hall of the Crewe Heritage Centre today to congratulate Pete Waterman and Cheshire East Council on the creation of 20 new Trainee Railway Heritage Engineer jobs.
Following a reception, Pete gave the Minister a tour around the works which included climbing aboard 6201, Princess Elizabeth, which was in steam for the occasion.
The new jobs will be at the London and North Western Railway Heritage Works which is part of the Crewe Heritage site.
The skills being taught at the works are initially specific to the supply chain supporting heritage railways, with the project acting as a pilot for community apprenticeship schemes applicable to the railway of the future.
The project is part of the proposed National Skills Academy for Railway Engineering (NSARE).
The scheme will provide an "entry-level" qualification for those wanting to commence a career in railway engineering which will form an invaluable platform for the ongoing work on the NSARE.
This will be an important component of the academy's plans to provide opportunities and apprenticeships for both young people and adults.
The Crewe Heritage Centre is proud to be associated with this exciting new project.
