FUTURE OF CREWE RAILWAY STATION Thursday, 5 February. 2009 Network Rail has halted plans to consult on the potential relocation of Crewe station.
The company has accepted the Office of Rail Regulation's spending budget for 2009 to 2014 - a settlement that did not include finance to upgrade the rail infrastructure around Crewe. At the same time, the company has reaffirmed its support for the previously proposed Gateway scheme, backing the project in a letter to the North West Development Agency.
Network Rail had started to look at the potential to move the station as part of a re-signalling scheme that could have altered the layout of the tracks either side of the station. The company's plans for re-signalling the area are now to be re-examined in the coming years.
Commenting on the decision, Network Rail's Principle Commercial Scheme Sponsor, Andrew Skidmore said "I know that people in Crewe have wanted us to make our intentions clear. We have decided not to consult on the idea of moving the station because it has not been included in the spending budget for the next five years."
The announcement comes as Crewe station starts to benefit from a £1m package of works, improving the roof, lighting and waiting room between platforms 6 and 11. |
